Welcome to the second round of the Western Province Kart Championships, which is set to take place on 15th April 2023 at the iconic Killarney International Raceway. Following the action-packed and exciting round 1, the racing enthusiasts and fans are eagerly waiting for another exhilarating display of skills and talent from the best karters in the province.
Bambino (5th – 9th birthday)
The Bambino class, which is specifically designed for young racers between the age of 5 and 9 years, will kick off the day’s action. In round 1, Michael O’Mohoney showcased his impressive skills and emerged as the winner in this category. However, with a highly competitive field, it remains to be seen if he will be able to repeat his performance with the likes of Carter Cedras, Caleb Lingeveld and Jacques Lewis all eager to make a mark early on in the title chase.
The rest of the grid sees entries from Radhi Harris, Ebrahim Khalpey, Slater Smith, Yaqeen Gamieldien and Jake Steyn.

Micro MAX (7th – 11th birthday)
Next up is the Micro Max class, which is for racers aged between 7 and 11 years. In round 1, it was Michael Danks who grabbed the top spot, leaving the other racers behind. Danks will be looking to extend his lead in the championship standings, but he will face a tough challenge from the likes of Liam Wharton and Kiyaan Reddi, who finished second and third, respectively, in the previous round.
Dont discount good showings from Bambino stars Michael O’Mahoney and Carter Cedras, Jayden van der Merwe, Ruan Lewis and Ashaan Reddi while entries from Zac Hindley, Ruan Gerderblom and Mia Hermanus round off this exciting Micro Max class.

Mini ROK (8th – 13th birthday)
Moving on to the Mini Rok class, which is for racers between 8 and 13 years of age, where Sebastiano Human emerged victorious in round 1. However, Human will face a tough challenge from the Boshoff brothers Zac and Max and Daniel Arendse, who finished just off the podium last time out.
More names to keep an eye on are Logan Roehrig, Aadiv Singh, Ruhan Victor, Onwabile Mcinga and Aashay Nagura who should find himself fighting upfront having missed the first race of the season.

Mini MAX (9th – 13th birthday)
In the Mini Max class, which is for racers between 9 and 13 years of age, we saw a close battle between the Beaumon Brothers, Keagan and Aiden in round 1, with younger Aiden narrowly edging out his brother to claim the top spot. Keagan will be looking to turn the tables in round 2 and emerge as the winner with Aiden currently not entered for round 2.
Big movers from Round 1 were Cody Schultz, Liam Koekemoer and Nicolas Lennox. Expect Franco Bensch to join that party soon along with Aleksandar Praizovic with exciting debut races ahead for Zach McAuley, Mikko Arries and Aaron Mason.

Junior MAX (12th – 14th birthday)
The Junior Max class is for racers between the age of 12 and 14 years. Round 1 saw a dominant performance from Reese Koorzen and Jordon Wadeley, who finished way ahead of the rest of the field. However, with a talented pool of racers chasing the front two in the category, it remains to be seen if they can continue without challenge.
Expect the talented William Marshall, Ethan Deacon, Keagan Beaumont, Joshua Smit and Jude Stuart to mount the pressure in what has to be one of the most competitive lineups in the country right now. Unfortunately speedster Matthew Chiwara is still recovering from his horrific crash a month ago, he would have been right there with this bunch.
Add to that James Nash, Cole Hewetson, Anwil April and Joshua Moore and you have a recipe for fireworks come lights out tomorrow!

Senior MAX (14th birthday +)
In the Senior Max class, for racers aged 14 and above, it was Charl Visser who emerged as the winner in round 1. Visser will be hoping to continue his good form, but he will face stiff competition from the likes of Matthew Wadeley and Ethan Stier as was the case at round 1.
Don’t discount top performance from Formula 1600 driver Storm Lanfear and Zac Laden with improved performances expected from Lucas Aladag and Julius Schwager.

DD2 (15th birthday +) and DD2 Masters (32nd birthday +)
In the DD2 class, which features karts with 2-speed gearboxes, we saw a thrilling battle between Joseph Oelz and Jason Coetzee in round 1, with Oelz emerging as the winner. However, expect 2022 National champion Sebastian Boyd to bounce back strongly, making this one helluva 3 way fight on Saturday. With a highly competitive field, the DD2 class promises to be one of the most exciting categories of the day with further entries from Jaden Jacobs and Rafe Tayler.

MASTERS
Then we have the DD2 Masters class, which is for racers aged 32 and above. In round 1, it was veteran racer, Conor Hughes , who emerged as the winner, but he will have to fend off a strong challenge from the Jordan brothers Michael and Jared with Steve Beaumont and Niel Lambrechts ready to pounce on any gaps offered.

WP CLUBMANS
Clubmans action this season with Jerome Alfred hoping for better mechanical luck than he had in 2022, while OKLA Sim Karting founder Shan Laubscher will move from his rig to the real world as he makes his karting debut.

Conclusion
In conclusion, round 2 of the Western Province Kart Championships promises to be a highly competitive and exciting day of racing, with talented racers in all categories battling it out for top honors. It will be interesting to see if the winners from round 1 can maintain their momentum, or if we will see some new faces emerge as the champions.
Lastly, from Racebook Media and the entire Cape Karting community we would like to send our condolences to the Wadeley family. Jordan (Junior Max) and Matthew (Senior Max) will most certainly race for the mother, and wife to Brad, Leigh this weekend after she lost her battle with cancer earlier this week. Good luck guys as we continue to keep you in our thoughts.
