12-year-old Reese Koorzen dominated Round 5 of the WPMC Karting Championship in fine style this past weekend as he powered his RKT Boss Parolin to pole position and 3 race wins.
It was a fantastic showing from Koorzen who looks right at home in Junior Max Class. Calculating and lethal, he set the track alight with his quick lap times. When that kart lined up in P1 on the pre-race grid you knew he meant business.
Come qualifying Koorzen was fired up, aided by the extra confidence of a brand new set of Mojo D5 rubber. It was him against the stopwatch as he used all the available grip on offer to set an incredible lap time of 41.283.
Pole position gave him the perfect platform to launch his attack. Lights out for race 1 and Reese cruised into Turn 1 with confidence. He held onto the lead and from there put his head down. He consistently knocked out impressive lap times and opened up a healthy gap to the chasing pack. It was a 15-lap Koorzen show as he romped his way to victory.
Big hugs and smiles were on show from Reese, his father Mark and the incredibly experienced Leon Coetzer who had prepared young Reese’s machinery. It’s great when it all comes together, but the hard work wasn’t over as 2 races still remained.
In race 2 Koorzen stared once again. Starting from P1 again and much like the previous race, he was able to maintain and pull away from the drivers behind. He kept to himself and made no mistakes as he cruised to his second dominant win in as many races.
It was time for race 3 and the pressure to get 3 out of 3 wins on the day to secure the overall victory was on. When a driver finds themselves in that position, the goal is to ensure a final victory on the day. This ensures that going into the next Championship round, they are the one to beat. Koorzen soaked up any pressure, went out and delivered the goods for the third and final time. Three wins and an overall top step for the weekend, yet another full haul of Championship points in the bag.
“Went just as expected. Three from three. During warm-up, we had old tyres on so I knew we would find pace when we put the new rubber on for qualifying. I want to say well done to all the competitors in the class, especially to Jude and Ashton on their podiums and to Jordon for making an impressive debut in Junior Max”
commented Reese.
Koorzen is in a rich vein of form at present and one wonders if he can be stopped. With only three rounds left of the WP Regional Karting Championships, he has all but cemented the title.
Round 6 is just around the corner and Koorzen will be out for another display of quality driving.
Stay tuned to find out how it goes.
