It’s RMC World Finals Week, and Sebastian couldn’t be more excited.
Sebastian Boyd will be representing South Africa in the DD2 class at the prestigious Rotax Karting World Finals which will be hosted at the Portimao circuit in Portugal this week. The young man who turns 21 in January is very excited to be racing overseas again after securing his 2nd South African National DD2 Championship in the last 3 years making it 4 National titles in his karting career so far.
Seb has been in some prolific form of late, and with some more experience under his belt, he is relishing his chance to represent South Africa after missing out in 2020 after the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As things stand, South Africa is still the most successful country in the world when it comes to the Rotax World finals, something that Boyd will be aiming to replicate. It’s a dream to add to the long list of World Champions that our nation has and Boyd definitely has the potential to be right
PORTIMAO
The DD2 class will be as competitive as ever, but Boyd will be relishing the fact that the chassis provided to all the DD2 drivers is the BirelART, the same chassis he uses at home for his Regional and National racing. Being familiar with the characteristics of the BirelART kart will go a long way for him as it means he can focus on perfecting his setup and extracting the performance he needs for success come The Final next weekend aided by the fact Boyd will be running with the experienced Peter Kalman, who should have a trick or 2 up his sleeve for the young South African.
Briefly catching up with Sebastian’s father Warren Boyd, he had this to say about his son’s 2022 racing campaign, “I am beyond proud of Sebastian and have huge admiration for his dedication and commitment in achieving his 4th South African National Championship”
It’s a World Final and that will mean plenty of stiff competition for Seb as he navigates the practice and qualifying heats this week. The goal will be to make it out of the qualifying heats cleanly while maintaining a good position. From then on, anything can happen with the finals.
“I’m super excited to finally get the chance to compete at a world final. Having qualified for the past 3 years and not being able to go due to covid was disappointing but the wait has made this one sweeter. Also really excited to drive this track again as I did in the 2017 grand finals”, said Boyd.
Sebastian knows he has put in the hard work and if all goes to plan,2022 could emerge as an even bigger season than it already has.
Stay tuned as Seb hits the track this week. You can follow the action on Facebook where results, live timing and live stream information will be posted. All info is available on the Rotax Website
