Round 8 of the WPMC Karting Championship delivered on all fronts! The conclusion of what has been a mighty year of racing with the Capes’s best karters going head to head.
It’s in times like these that we have to appreciate the massive effort and sacrifice it took from all the members and we are surely blessed to have a racing club as healthy as the WPMC Karting Section.
Onto the results and to find out who the 2022 Class Champions are, let’s get stuck in!
Bambino (5th – 9th birthday)
A day to remember for our young stars who once again shone brighter than the sun.
They all drove their hearts out and it was an inspiring display of passion and perseverance. However, there was a standout performance from one young man, Michael O’Mahoney (RDSA Topkart). 3 out of 3 wins with a driving masterclass left saw him take his first clean sweep of the year and the best possible way to round off the season.
Number 46 Liam Wharton (Topkart) showed true maturity and showed his racing awareness with a beautiful drive. P2 on the day and the points needed to be crowned your 2022 WP Bambino Champion! Wharton has only been racing for 2 and a half years and now has a very well-deserved title in what is his last year of Bambino racing.
Jayden van der Merwe (Black Widow Racing Topkart) continued his run of good form and has proven he can punch well above his weight in a class littered with talent. As the youngest driver on the grid, he can be happy with his debut season. 3rd on the day and P6 in the championship.
Zac Boshoff (Topkart) was next up in the standings with a trying day. He really had to dig deep and was often put to the test by his rivals. An off day but still a terrific P2 in the championship.
Carter Cedras (Topkart) was also made to work really hard and enjoyed some super close battles. He had to settle for P5 on the day but did well to hold onto his 4th in the championship.
Caleb Lingeveldt (RDSA Topkart) was up next with a steady P6. He was followed by Micah Corneilse (Topkart) and another RDSA driver Tshepiso Modimosana (Topkart).
A much improved Slater Smith (Topkart) and returnee Yaqeen Gamieldien (Topkart) rounded off the standings.
Kid ROK (6th – 10th birthday)
Max Boshoff (Exprit) flew the flag high for his camp once again with another stellar display. 3 out of 3 wins and a championship title to add to his name.
Younger brother Zac Boshoff followed suit with 2nd place in all 3 races. It was a great day for the Boshoff family!
Logan Roehrig (Exprit) just fell short of the pace set by the boys ahead. P3 on the day and good enough to claim P2 in the championship.
Max Denisov (OTK) battled brilliantly and missed out on a very tight podium by 1 point. He will be pleased that he still managed to grab P3 in the championship, great effort!
Ruhan Victor (OTK) and Aadiv Singh (Exprit) rounded off the Kid Rok grid with P5 and P6 respectively.
Micro MAX (7th – 12th birthday)
Matthew Roach drove to an excellent 3 out of 3 wins. Mature and calm under pressure as he worked his way towards his first karting championship. Next year he plans on making the step up to Junior Max, so keep an eye on this talented youngster.
Nicolas Lennox (RS Kart) stunned everyone with some brutal pace which saw him competing for a very strong podium. What was even more surprising was it was his first race in a different chassis, so he adapted really quickly to become a front-runner. In the end P2 and potentially even a shout for the driver of the day in Micro Max.
Another driver who blew expectations was class rookie Michael O’Mahoney (RDSA Strive Racing CRG). In only his 2nd race in the class, he managed to finish P3 on the day and showcased some quality racecraft to mix it up with the big boys.
Up next were Zach McAuley (Kosmic) and Liam Wharton (CRG). Both showed great speed but were just not able to put it all together. Watch out for these two in 2023.
It was P6 for newcomer Ruben Gelderblom (CRG) who performed admirably in what was his first-ever race.
Michael Danks (CRG) was unlucky on the day with a DQ in race 1 but came back strong to claim P2 in race 2 and race 3. Great to see him never give up and push to the very end allowing him to secure P3 in the Championship.
Mini ROK (8th – 13th birthday)
Comeback king Sebastiano Human (OTK) was your Mini Rok winner and driver of the day, great drive! It has to go down as one of his best performances of the year and deservedly won the day.
James Nash (LN Kart) made it a 2 way battle for the overall win and after some wheel-to-wheel action the pair ended up on equal points. With fewer race wins, Nash had to settle for P2. Great driving lads!
Max Boshoff suffered a bit of an off day but still managed to fight off up-country driver Caleb Moss (RKT Parolin). In some cases, it came down to the last few laps and every point counts. P3 for Boshoff and Moss takes P4 with lots of experience gained.
Aaron Mason (FTW LN Kart) was next up and found himself with a shout for the podium spots as well. In race 1 he managed to finish a brilliant 3rd but after that, he found it hard to maintain and fell back off the pace a bit. Cecil Koorts (OTK) was also on the radar and he did well to finish just adrift of Mason.
Troy Ribeiro (OTK) and Daniel Arendse (OTK) brought it home in P7 and P8.
Mini MAX (9th – 14th birthday)
Keagan Beaumont (RDSA Strive Racing CRG) wrapped up his Championship in dominant fashion with a full house pole position and 3 race wins, leaving his opposition in his dust. Fair reward for all the hard work by the now back-to-back Western Province Champion.
Matthew Chiwara (Sodi kart) was best of the rest in what was a very tight battle for 2nd. Right with him was the CRG duo of Jordon Wadeley (EMR Kartsport CRG) and Sabelo Ntuli (CRG). In the windy conditions, it was all about lining up for the slipstream down the straights. The battles lasted all 12 laps of each race and it was electric to watch! Well done boys for keeping it clean and putting on a show.
Wadeley did enough to maintain his P2 in the championship while Chiwara leapfrogged Ntuli at the last hurdle to claim P3 in the championship by 6 points.
Liam Koekemoer (Nashua Cape Town LN Kart) rounded off the standings and took some good points once again.
Junior MAX (12th – 16th birthday)
Unstoppable Reese Koorzen (RKT/Boss Parolin) romped to another clean sweep on the weekend. With this achievement, he has solidified his first Junior Max WP title in record-breaking style. To manage 22 out of 24 race wins in your rookie year in the class is some feat, amazing stuff young man!
Ethan Deacon (Stier Racing OTK) followed him with P2 in all 3 races. Consistent as ever giving him the point to solidify his P2 in the championship.
Jordan Wadeley (EMR Kartsport CRG) drove to an emphatic P3 giving him his first-ever Junior Max podium finish. In only his 3rd race in the class that deserves some high praise!
Ashton Repsold (CRG) fought hard with Wadeley and came back after a nasty accident in race 1 which saw a kart go over the top of him. The race 1 retirement didn’t subdue his hunger to win as he raced back to 2 podium finishes in races 2 and 3.
Oliver Roach (CRG) and Jude Stuart (CRG) collected P5 and P6.
Senior MAX (14th birthday +)
Matthew Wadeley (EMR Kartsport CRG) brought out his best to top rival and friend Ethan Stier (Stier Racing OTK).
These young men have huge respect for each other on and off the track, and their title fight went down to the last race of the championship. It was nail-biting to watch and both boys deserve praise for how they conducted themselves. Wadelely P1 on the day and your new WP Senior Max Champion.
Zac Laden (Kosmic) fought off Jaden Jacobs (OTK) to claim his first podium finish in what has been a very short racing career so far. He was visibly delighted with his first-ever podium and the way he is going I’m sure there will be many more.
DD2 (15th birthday +) and DD2 Masters (32nd birthday +)
Old rivalries resurfaced and tensions erupted in what was a chaotic and entertaining race day for the DD2 class.
Sebastian Boyd (Boss Boyd Freight BirelArt) avoided the chaos and stayed calm when it counted. The South African DD2 Champion showed his experience to claim 3 out of 3 wins as the dust kicked up behind him.
Meanwhile, Top DD2 competitors Jason Coetzee and Jurie Swart dropped down the order after some penalties were dished out. This gave the opportunity for the Master drivers to jump onto the DD2 podium. Taking that with both hands were Connor Hughes (Kosmic) and Jared Jordan (Jordan Racing CRG).
Next up in the DD2 standings was Michael Jordan (Jordan Racing BirelArt) who finished in P5. He had a fun day battling off the Master’s drivers and can be very happy with 5th overall.
The next DD2 was Eugene Clark (CRG) who got P8 overall. He too had his fair share of action. Jurie Swart (Kosmic), Jason Coetzee (Exprit) and Joseph Oelz (LN Kart) rounded off the standings with all 3 drivers scoring 0 for race 3.
Oelz despite the bad last round did enough to claim the 2022 DD2 WP Championship.
MASTERS
Connor Hughes (Kosmic) drove himself to a double podium on the day. P2 in DD2 and P1 in DD2 Masters. Excellent job by the experienced driver who was in the right place at the right time. That wrapped another WP Masters title for Hughes as he continues to dominate in the Cape.
Jared Jordan (Jordan Racing CRG) drove to a terrific P2 and was back to some of his best driving. His pace and consistency were right up there and it was a brilliant way to end off a tough season with a double podium as well. He also clinched 3rd in the title on the day.
Marco Viegas (CRG) showed a good turn of speed once again but had a close retirement in Race 1 when he got driven over by a fellow competitor. The damage to the kart left him with no power valve or radiator cap but still, he kept going, scoring vital points. With the points scored he finished P2 in the Masters Championship.
Andrew Thomas (RaceBook Media / RDSA CRG) was next up with Andre Steenkamp (Komsic) behind him. The pair were well off their best and it would be good to see them fighting for wins once again next season.
Brendan Lennox (CRG) and Neville Chapman (BirelArt) found themselves in P6 and P7 and rounding off the final standing was Niel Lambrechts (Zanardi) and Johan Hamman (BirelArt).
WP Clubmans (14th birthday +)
Andre Le Riche (Seleka Kosmic) returned to winning ways with a haul of 3 podiums giving him P1 on the day.
He was chased down by Christopher Flack (CRG) who had his best outing to date. Great to see some new faces on the podium.
Another driver to shine was PJ Garbutt (CRG) who secured his first podium finish of the season as well. Better late than never as they say.
Sean Le Riche (Seleka Racing Kosmic) finished off the podium which is very uncharacteristic for the man who has been Mr Consistency in the Clubmans championship.
Behind him, Jade Smith (PCR) and Ethan Rutter (Arrow) fought it out for the mid-pack honours.
Settling the standings were Luca Wehrli (OTK) and Jason McArthur (CRG).
Conclusion
WPMC Karting came saw and conquered in true fashion. Whether at the front or the back of the grid, milestones were achieved and above all pure motorsport fun was had by all in the club.
It was a record-breaking season for the WPMC Karting Section and one of which Chairman John Coetzee and his team can be very proud. The anticipation for what 2023 holds is high!
Until then, enjoy the break from racing and we look forward to doing it all again next year!
